FAIR HUMANITARIAN ACTION

Help Doctors is an independant medical organisation working in international humanitarian emergencies.

Help Doctors is an humanitarian organisation commited to the principles of impartiality and professionalism, with an extensive experience and knowledge of the field. As a result, Help Doctors is ready to act immediately and efficiently in challenging contexts.
Our work is based on the principle of “fair humanitarian action”.
This principle means that we are present where medical needs exist, independent of the level of media attention or economic or political interests in the situation.
It also means that we base our work on respect and trust with local health partners in the country, and we fast track our response following our assessment of the situation.

Palestinian Territories, Nablus: The Old City's Primary Health Care Center.

In cooperation with a Palestinian medical team we are providing health care on a daily basis to a population of 30,000 people of the poorest in Nablus, with a particular focus on women and children. In case of medical emergencies, this Primary Health Care Center is the only medical service open in the area during the military operations and curfews. It has been recognized and integrated in the Emergency plans of the Governorate of Nablus and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Madagascar: the region of Analanjiforo

In this region on the North-East coast of Madagascar, with a population of 816,000, malnutrition, Malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS are widespread. For Help Doctors, it's an unidentified emergency. Poverty and lack of health personnel lead to poor access to health care for the majority of the population. In our program, we are training primary health care workers and putting in place a primary health center as well as training hospital staff. Particular attention is given to the risk of climatic natural disasters (cyclones and floods).

Throughout the world we use our international network to follow on a daily basis the development of crises, armed conflicts and natural disasters (including climatic disasters). This allows us to respond immediately when needed.

India: Ladakh

Located in the Himalayan ranges of the States of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh is the most isolated region of the Indian sub-continent due to both harsh climatic conditions and geographical remoteness. Between traditional care (termed "amchi") and occidental medical treatment, access to care remains difficult for the nomads Ladakhis and the migrant population (which includes numerous Nepalese workers). We are planning to work on preventative health care through a Primary Health Care Center in the regional capital, Leh, which also serves the surrounding villages.

Liberia: Monrovia

After 15 years of civil war, the country is in a fragile reconstruction phase and insecurity remains high. The health system is almost non-existent and life expectancy is a mere 46 years. In this difficult post-conflict health crisis we are planning to reopen access to health care through public hospitals and to put in place emergency medical, surgical and obstetrical health services.

International Monitoring and Response:

In Indonesia, together with a network of local partners, we are closely monitoring the risk of a Bird Flu Pandemic. We have also developed contingency plans for an appropriate medical response in the case of a Bird Flu Pandemic.

Efficiency and Transparency

Various partners are supporting and funding Help Doctors: private companies addressing corporate social responsibility, foundations and private donors, cities and local governments...

Our financial policy is based on 3 principles:

  • Decentralization of the resources to our field programs
  • Financial transparency
  • Monitoring the utilization of funds during the entire project cycle

We have available effective and reliable financial and reporting systems for:

  • Close monitoring and supervision of the field-based teams
  • Reporting on the activities and results of our missions
  • Ongoing financial reporting
The Emergency Fund
Effective and appropriate responses to the humanitarian emergencies (natural disasters, conflicts) cannot occur without moblising a team to work in the field. The first 48 hours are crucial and it?s during these two days that the most lives are saved.
This very short timing does not allow time for fund raising for such operations. To respond effectively, we have developed an "Emergency Fund" to ensure that we have funds immediately available for these situations.

A network of health workers in action:

With extensive experience in humanitarian work, our volunteers are all seasoned professionals in this field.
Help Doctors is a network of more than 1,000 emergency response doctors who are working inpartnership with the l’Association des Médecins Urgentistes de France(AMUF).
With the help of the Children of the World Anesthesia Foundation (COTWAF) we are focusing on the training of health workers to respond to the health risks of children undergoing operations, including pre and post-operative procedures.
Our volunteers include doctors, anesthetists, surgeons, mid-wives and nurses. In addition to their expertise in humanitarian settings, our volunteers are also selected for their versatility, their commitment and skills in post-emergency or development settings.
